Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will my entry be judged on clarity?

A: No. Judges will do a blind taste - and there will be no visual clues to bias their decisions. So if your entry is a hair above or below the line (having a hair in it is NOT recommended:) it shouldn't matter - or if there are air bubbles, etc. - this contest is all about taste.

Q: Does my entry have to be from this season's harvest - and does it matter the nectar source or season?

A: No. It can be from any year or season or from any nectar your bees have collected. Honey does not go bad if properly stored and the only restriction is you meet the entry deadline.

Q: Can I still enter if my bees live outside the Southern Appalachian region?

A: Yes. The Center considers itself a WorldWide organization and we expect this contest to get bigger every year. As it matures into the PRIMO showcase for real honey we may break down categories for regions or particular floral sources. The publicity will help bees and beekeepers everywhere.

Q: Can I enter more than once?

A: Yes. Many beekeepers produce seasonal varietals that differ in taste. Have you ever bought a lottery ticket? In theory, your chances of winning increase with the number of entrees you submit. However, each entry must consist of the 3 jars, a seperate entry form, and a $10 (US) fee as outlined in the Rules. :)

Q: When I win, what will I get besides my prize money?

A: Every winner gets a ribbon -  printed with the year of the Black Jar Contest. If you win 'Best in World' your name will go on the Black Jar Trophy. (No, you don't get to keep that. We want to be sure it doesn't get broken:) We will post all the winners on this website so you can direct  doubters our way. Additionally, you can brag about having proof your honey is exceptional - when you're selling at market or gifting your friends.
